ICRA 2018 Workshop on Aerial Robotic Inspection and Maintenance: Research Challenges, Field Experience and Industry Needs
The groundbreaking contributions in aerial robotics design and autonomy have enabled their wide and ever increasing integration in multiple important applications. Novel research has enabled us to think of such systems that go beyond the role of an automated camera in the sky. Through a set of pioneering works in aerial manipulation, perception, planning, control, multi-robot collaboration and machine learning, we are now close to realize the vision of autonomous aerial robotic structural monitoring and maintenance. As acknowledged from both the academic and the industrial sector, such a capability has tremendous potential in critical applications such as industrial infrastructure and industrial plant inspection and maintenance, nature conservation and security tasks. This fact is highlighted by the increasing interest of key industry players and their active involvement in related research projects. This workshop aims to mark a cornerstone in relation to the presentation of novel and groundbreaking contributions in science and technology as well as in terms of further enabling the dialogue of academia and industry. The goal is to discuss the remaining research and development challenges, organize the needs of industry and provide input to the community about state of the art and prioritized research needs. A rich schedule consisting of presentations from renowned leaders in the field and industry representatives, a poster-session, a demonstration of a comprehensive open source simulator environment to accelerate research as well as a relevant round table discussion are planned. By the end of the workshop, the organizers plan to publicly release a “Roadmap for Aerial Robotic Inspection and Maintenance Research & Development” that will stand as a tool at the hands of researchers, the industry and policymakers. This roadmap will be further accompanied by a short review article to be submitted by the organizers.
